A wonderful Saturday at the Crickhowell Literary Festival... and food for thought.

Our first event was at the Clarence Hall with Jackie Morris...

...introducing the book "The Lost Words".

Text by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated by Jackie.

On the back cover these words are written...

...giving a good idea of what the book is about.

Once upon a time, words began to vanish from the language of children.

They disappeared so quietyly that at first almost no one noticed -

until one day, they were gone.

But there is an old kind of magic for finding what is missing,

and for summoning what has vanished.

If the right spells are spoken, the lost words might return...

Inside are delicious watercolour paintings...

...like this one for BRAMBLE...

...each one with a "spell" to go with it...

...and each line begins with a letter that, when put together, spells the title of the poem.

Clever!

Here are a few more pictures to tempt you...

Our second event was with Alex Langlands...

...give a talk and lively demos relating to his new book Craeft.

To give a flavour...

In a period of meaningless mass manufacturing, our growing appetite for hand-made objects, artisan food, and craft beverages reveals our deep cravings for tradition and quality. But there was a time when craft meant something very different; the Old English word cræft possessed an almost indefinable sense of knowledge, wisdom, and power. In this fascinating book, historian and popular broadcaster Alex Langlands goes in search of the mysterious lost meaning of cræft. Through a vibrant series of mini-histories, told with his trademark energy and charm, Langlands resurrects the ancient craftspeople who fused exquisite skill with back-breaking labour-and passionately defends the renewed importance of cræft today

It was most interesting and I'm looking forward to a good read!

Both speakers told tales of how our world has changed...

...or is changing beyond recognition...

...and not necessarily for the better.

It's completely in accordance with my sentiments...

...and why I'm making changes in my own environment.

On the front of Alex's book are the words...

"How traditional crafts are about more than just making"

...he talked about the importance of THE MAKING...

...rather than simply the finished object.

I couldn't agree more!

Looking briefly at one of those craft (selling) channels this morning...

..the presenter was so eager to point out just how quickly you could get this item finished!

How about we focus more on the pleasure derived from the actual making...

...how good it can feel to sit quietly doing...

...and feeling relaxed and content.

Yes...of course you'll get pleasure out of the finished object...

...but let's enjoy the journey first?

Cardiff Quilters Exhibition. - going into production...

I'm struggling to find things to show on here right now...

...as most of what is going on in the background is to do with a couple of books that will be published either at the end of 2017 or into 2018.

However....

...my quilting group Cardiff Quilters is celebrating it's 25th birthday this year...

...and we are holding an exhibition at Ararat Baptist Church on the 29th July.

Here's the Quilters' Guild notice if anyone is interested.

There's going to be a Tombola, Raffle and a Sales Table along with some traders.....

...so I'm in production with some handmade notebooks/sketchbooks for the event.

Each one will have a machine-stitched Sashiko square on the front cover...

...which will be made of some of my special "leather paper" dyed specially in a shade of pale blue.

I'll make the pages out of fairly heavy paper so that they'll stand up to collage etc.

I'm hoping to get quite a few done...

...plus a few other bits and pieces too.

Once these are all finished I'll get onto some Tombola gifts...

Try to call by if you can...

...it'll be a great day. :-)

Wonderful Workshop Weekend!! (Lots of piccies!!)

What a completely WONDERFUL weekend I had at the East Midlands Regional Summer School!

Fifteen lovely ladies...

...who did some beautiful work on their "Treasured Memories" books.

I am so proud of them all!!

Didn't they do well?

It was a great social weekend too....

...with the other tutors, Angie Hughes and Helen Richman, and students all meeting up for meals and coffees.

Thanks to Hilary and Di for all their hard work organising the event.

Winter Wonders

I've been putting the finishing touches to some more samples for my "Winter Solstice" workshop at Arts Alive this coming weekend.

I'm thoroughly looking forward to having a wonderful time with a total of 10 ladies....

...who will be joining me to make somethings like these.

Winter Birch brooches....

...using stencils and Markal Paint Stiks from Colourcraft.

...and some delightful bare winter tree stitched pieces...

...using the most beautiful wooden block from Colouricious!

(Only one of a number actually!)

I've also made a couple of folded/wrapped books...

...one being an "amulet" to protect the home...

...using Viking runes...

...and another with part of a winter poem "Lux Aeterna" by Lassi Nummi

(Thanks to Donald Adamson for the poem in full and to Alison Burns for the shortened version. which my choir have sung on many occasions!)

I have other plans for part of this text too...

...if I can fit it in tomorrow! :-o

...decisions and plans...

I had such a wonderful time at Fashion, Embroidery & Stitch!!!

......and met so many lovely people that either know me from my blog...

...or through Facebook.

Other folk too.....met for the very first time....

...but I'm sure it won't be the last :-)

I felt very lucky this year. Being on a Demo stand...

...and having a loan of a Pfaff Creative 3.0 to play with during the 4 days.

What a dream machine! Mostly the same as my own Creative 2.0, but with even more built in stitches and a touchscreen control panel.

If you're thinking of treating yourselves...

...this is THE machine to have!!

Of course, there were, as always, the lovely folk on stands selling beautiful bits and bobs...

...that one simply HAS to indulge in....

Gorgeous silks from The Silk Route...

...and little beauties from 21st Century Yarns.

Projects in mind for ALL of these....of course!! :-o

The show also provided the opportunity to meet up with much loved friends who cheerfully bump into each other at each one.....

Laura & Mike at Colourcraft;    Claire at Thermofax;   Hilary and Man at The Silk Route;

Jean & Walter at Oliver Twists;  Michael Powell;  Kim Thittichai;  Christine Plummer;  Angie Hughes;   .....

...and many, many more......

A joy as always. Thanks ICHF!!

I have been doing a bit of thinking over the last couple of weeks.....

....about what to do....and which way to go with things now.

I've never done very big items, simply because of the amount of embellishment I tend to put on my stuff....

....but after having done some book forms in recent times I feel that I'd like to keep working that way....

...certainly for a while.

So.....

...small it is......and more mixed media as opposed to all stitch.

This will allow me to explore current interests and do small projects that don't take up too much time.

Thus I can flit from one thing to another while still carrying on with my writing and sample-making without tying myself to the chair for too long.

Well.....I am a Textile Butterfly after all aren't I?!

I have sooooooooooooooooo many bits and pieces to use....

...and new ideas in mind.

I shall be happy to share my progress with you all.....
