...well they can HERE anyway!
The UK Embellisher Swap theme this month was a pair of egg cosies.
So.....
...following on with my current "African" theme, I dyed some silk caps in (what I think of as) "African colours"......
...and embellished it onto black wool/viscose felt.
I loved the way the effect turned out.....
...sort of like a rock surface that's just begging to have some "rock art" done on it!
This, of course, means that the embellisher will now be on the table for a few days while I play around with ideas......:-)

...more sketchbook pages....
I've been spening time working in my "Henna" sketchbook this week....
...I find it helps to really get "into" the subject.
The first thing done....
...was a cover....
...because it had only had a plain blue one before.
More pages have been filled....
...with "Henna Goddesses"...
....and some Ancient Berber letters...
These are something I'm finding very interesting indeed. They were used on special haiks along with magical symbols that afforded protection to the wearer.
There is a haik of particular note...
...one that belonged to a "wise man/magician/healer"...
This has a great number of symbols painted on it...
...an example of one is here...
As soon as I saw it, it struck a chord....
...as I have a number of books illustrated by Rachid Koraichi, an Algerian sufi artist.
These are a couple of pages from "Rumi - Le miroir infini" (Rachid Koraichi/Marina Lostia)
...and these are from "Tu es mon amour depuis tant d'annees" (Rachid Koraichi/Nancy Houston)
This book is never far from my hand.
Any book with words like....
"Tu es mon amour depuis tant d'annees, dit l'ombre a la lumiere et la lumiere a l'ombre......... sans toi je ne suis rien"
(You are my love for all time, said the dark to the light, and the light to the dark.....without you I am nothing)
...and...
"sans femme, pas d'homme.... sans homme, pas de femme.... offrandes reciproques...."
(Without woman, no man.....without man, no woman....reciprocal gifts)
...should have a place in everyone's home........
Sorry!...I haven't worked out how to find the letters with accents yet :-(

Blodeuwedd
A little while ago, Carolyn (Love Stitching Red) and I decided to work on a joint project....
...to make a doll for each season of 2010.
No rules.....no particular requirements......just go with the flow as it were :-)
Our "Spring Dolls" are revealed today!
Carolyn's is shown on her Stitched Stuffies blogspot
...mine is here......and she's called "Blodeuwedd"......
...after the beauty in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi.....
She's a wasp-waisted form, with a molded face.....
..dressed in hand-dyed tea-bag fabric, scrim and silk paper....
...with plenty of green beads.
.....now what to do for "Summer"!?.......

Stitched and stuffed.......

...beaten copper bits....
...are what have been placed onto these two pieces.
.....I like the purple and brown mix......
....and how this one came to look like a "sunset" when it's bleached spot bleached un-evenly!
The copper was deliberately left untreated (no varnish or anything else)...
...so that it will darken and dull with age.
I'm thinking of using more copper bits with the henna pieces that are currently on my desk.....
...and I'm convinced that there's some "magic" going on here....
....I'm being steered towards.....
..triangles......
...amulets.....
..."goddesses".......

..trying to understand and relate to....
..the Berber (Feija) henna designs that I've been studying.
These textiles really intrigue me....
...and I feel that I want to know and understand more about them.....
..and the women who created them.
I find that working in a sketchbook allows me to "get inside" the subject a bit more....
..no rushing it....
...just sitting quietly with drawing/painting materials....
...and "feeling" what happens...

..another couple of panels....
..finished!
These are done on some of the fabric pieces that I dyed last week.
Again, not too much stitching.....
..rather allowing the piece to form itself.....
...around itself.
I've managed to find some ostrich egg-shell beads at last!
Only a few (86 actually)...but will be used with consideration to make them last :-)
In the same packet were some lovely coral pieces.....in a luscious gold/bronze colour...now just WHAT are THEY going to do for something :-)))))
...and I have had mega-luck in the charity shops.....
....finding some REAL necklaces to use for beads...
(rather than those awful plastic things with the beads stuck onto the string!)
I'm still looking for "unusual" things to use too....
...so this is a good place to introduce an ESSENTIAL part of the kit of any embroiderer.....
...hee hee heee...........
Play time!
