Photos in the mail....

I've had some lovely emails from the Lincolnshire Embroiderers Guild.....

....containing photos of work completed after my workshops there in May.

A gorgeous selection of Tribal Cloths and Amulets.....

I am SO proud of them all for producing such beautiful pieces of work!!

(Can't wait to re-visit next year :-)

.beads, beads, beads!

...are what's happening on my desk today.

This is a bit of the workshop "Tribal" panel...

...with loads and loads of #6 blue/purple rainbow beads.

It may be grey, damp and blowing outside...

...but it's lovely and bright in here! :-)))

Indian textile collages

In amongst other things, I've been doing some small textile collages.

I've used hand-dyed felt and other bits...

...including some sequins and "banjara" dangles.

These three are now all finished and mounted on cream board for sale.

The next few days will be spent stitching a tribal panel for a workshop at Busy Bees in October....

...and, afterwards, I'll be doing a "vessel" along similar lines, for another workshop down there next February.

The Mayan panel is coming along....

...it's almost spraytime... :-o

..no more guessing!

It's finished...

...my little "useful" thing...

A little "amulet"...

...that doubles (or quadruples) as a thread organiser, scissor keeper and pin cushion!

...complete with two little bells that jingle....

There. You can relax now :-)

...further on...

Lots of beading done now....

Are you any closer to guessing what it is I wonder? :-)))

Tea & Leaf Tuesday ....

Whew!

..almost didn't make this one....

...gotta be gone in 10 minutes....

But, here I am with my usual Tuesday indulgences :-)

Tea today is Chinese Jasmine...

...a Christmas pressie from my Bloke....

...and IN another Christmas pressie, a delightful little Chinese tea cup.

My leaf today...

...has the beginnings of something very useful on it!

Any guesses?

:-)))))

(Ooooooo...aren't I cruel!?)

..the time thief's been around again!

..too much to do...

...so little time....

Goodness knows where Tuesday went...between filling in forms for someone....going to the hairdressers to be tidied-up....printing songsheets....and going to choir...

...it just disappeared!

So did Wednesday for that matter, but at least we had a couple of hours out of the house doing nice moochy-about-things at the flea market in Abergavenny :-)

Not much to show except this....

...the final one in the series...

...in Salmon Pink & Grey.

Hopefully I'll have a bit more going on next time :-o

Damned computers!!

As I said in the previous post....

...the STITCH magazine article is out...

...and the new shop on line Wednesday evening....

Well, the best laid plans of mice and men of course.....

My poor Bloke, who's worked like a little (well maybe not so little) Trojan over the last god-knows-how-many months to get the website and shop up and running....

...despite having to go through a load of chemotherapy...

...various nasty surgical procedures....

..including being separated from his big toenails (ouch!!)...

...THEN discovered that the shop had a few "technical hitches"...

...for him to sort out...

...just when he thought it was done and dusted :-O !!!

It never ceases to amaze me how the absence of a single letter "s" can throw Internet Explorer into conniption fits....

...and that if you want something to be £15, you have to set a threshold four decimal places to the left ...(or is it right?)

Anyway, after all his hair grew back, he's now been tearing it out again....

...but it looks like it's sorted. Phew!

DAMNED COMPUTERS!!!

Anyway, while he's been doing that...

...I've been doing this...

..making tracks with the final "Tribal Cloth" sample in salmon/pink/grey.

As you can see, I'm on the beading, which is going to take me quite a few hours, but is well worth the effort as it makes the piece look sumptuous!

I've also been fiddling with a few more of these little ones...

..and will have a little pile of them to put together fairly soon.

I've almost finished the first little Breton house too....

...will post that as soon as the stuffing's done :-)

...Tribal.....STITCH....

For those of you that subscribe....

...you will have seen my little "Tribal Cloth" project in the Feb/Mar issue of "Stitch" magazine.

The original has a deep red colour central panel....

...quite a bit of hand-stitching...

...and lots and lots of beads!

There is a "Project Pack" available over in the shop....

...along with some others that follow the same stitch-plan......

...but are done in a green/yellow colour combo....

...and in purple too.

I'm working on another one.....in salmon/pink/grey, but it'll be next week before that's done!

I had such a good time working these pieces....

...I hope everyone else does too! :-)

(ps the shop URL will be changing tomorrow evening. From then on, it will be part of www.mabonarts.co.uk, rather than BigCartel. Service will be just the same though :-))))

...bits...

Another bit of "retail therapy" at Harrogate...

...resulted in the purchase of one of these.

...a lucet for making cord.

I'm intending to use the cord for couching in the next body of work...(I'll be saying more about this over the coming weeks)

...and the process is so enjoyable to do :-)

(Once you've got started that is!!)

Here's a piece of punchneedle work that I managed to get done during the 4 days of the show...

...a bit of a miracle really, considering the number of times I stopped and started in between talking and showing how it's threaded or done.

Ne'er mind though. There are a lot of people who bought an "UltraPunch" tool...

...and should be happily punching away by now :-)

Back here, stitching has also been happening.

Small squares...

..with both stitching and lots of beads...

...that will be joined together to form a much larger finished piece.

HAPPY NEW YEAR...........from the Diva Girlz

These are a couple of (what I call) "Diva Dolls" that were born last week. Came across the shape somewhere, made a template, cut them out, stitched ....and wehay... here they are!
I really enjoyed making them. so much so that I intend to make more this year. Will get Bloke to put up a shelf especially for them.....................

"Tribal Cloth" work has come along quite nicely since the last post. I managed to get these four "mini-cloths" done between Christmas and the New Year.

I'm so glad that I bought that embellisher!

I'm going to have a go at making some smaller pieces, and some wrist-cuffs this January. Same theme - various colours.

Keep your eyes peeled as something will be available as a givaway towards the end of the month - this will coincide with the opening of my new ETSY shop!

Here's to a very happy and creative 2009!

Back on Track!

Here are a couple of the "Tribal Cloth" samples that have been done over the last few days. It seems like AGES since I did any work on this project, but all the wooden print blocks have been excavated from their drawer and the paint pots are out - at last!

Wednesday 19th was a "biggie" - 50 years young! So Bloke and I went to our fav place - Hay-on-Wye, and had a really good book fix. Found a brill book on African tribal art and can't wait to get stuck-in creating lovely things inspired by the contents. Fancy doing some free-standing pieces this time - and some wall-mounted pieces - and some accessories - and then some whatever-I-feel-like-at-the-time thingies! Feels like this winter is going to be fun.....................

Tribal Cloth experiments

..been playing around with some wooden printing blocks on some pieces of dyed cloth... just to see what could be done.

Running stitches, not unlike Kantha, following the outline of the shape - in hand-dyed threads...

I think that this method will find it's way into the next couple of cloths... but maybe in more striking colours...

...I'm away to the paint pot drawer....

.. a lazy couple of days....

Been a bit stitching-lazy the last couple of days. But the brain has been working overtime! I'd ordered a few books from Amazon, and they've all arrived - Palestinian Embroidery; Embroidery of India and Pakistan; Embroidery from Afghanistan; and a delightfully inspirational "Afrikan Alphabets" with it's many strange and wonderful scripts/syllabaries. The little fat book on top of the pile is totally about early tribal tattoos - and what a source that is to trawl!

There is so much that has excited me in these volumes that I now cannot wait to begin some rather different "Tribal Cloths". It has, however, meant that I've had to shuffle and dig through a load of workroom boxes in order to find particular fabrics and threads, bottles of dye powders, and pots of natural pigments.

All the foam is ready to make the Adinkra print blocks; just need a nice day to go outside to cut them (because of evil fumes).

.....and the loom is warped ready to start on some stripweave fabric....

If anyone knows of an easy (and legal) way to extend the day from 24 to 72 hours, please post immediately!

..and about 3000 beads later..

"Tribal Cloth" #6 is finished!

The middle finger on my right hand is red and sore - but I just can't bear to have a thimble on when I stitch. The problem with this one was that there were an awful lot of beads to sew on, and beading needles are very fine - just the right size to easily poke through skin!

The things we do for love .......

I'm quite pleased with the outcome, certainly the colourway seems to have worked (any comments welcome). The next one is going to be most certainly mauve/purple.

Been looking up bits and bobs on African textiles, and have become very interested in ADRINKA CLOTH and it's symbols. I'm minded to cut some Adrinka printing blocks to use on the next few cloths.

Also toying with the idea of including some woven bands, and some cross-stitch panels.

I'll see what happens when it happens .....

Weekend Samples

Managed to get in a bit of sample work over the weekend - they're going towards Blue and Purple for a change!

A bit of embellisher work first

then machine stitching

then hand-stitching (bliss)

also got a fair bit done on "Tribal Cloth" Number 6. it's nearly there .....

hopefully by the end of this week....

This was how they started ............

Here are a couple of early samples that have ended up in my "Tribal Cloth" sketchbook. They began "happening" when I took delivery of my Janome Xpression embellisher and couldn't stop playing with it!

Being a weaver too (and an obsessive collector of all things textile), I had a large collection of lovely yarns - hand dyed/ hand-spun/ etc, so I began needling some onto a felt background. They looked OK, but weren't very interesting by themselves.

Out came the embroidery basket with it's collection of various yarns, threads, beads etc, and things began to come together.

The first ones are quite "tight" and close together, and got made into small items like book covers and purses (pictured below).

The "Tribal Cloths" "proper", have the yarns more widely spaced and a lot more added to them. I'm currently experimenting with some more beads/amulets and other bits to add to the vertical gaps. This is the task for the next few days....

I'll let you see what I come up with.

Tribal Cloth sketchbook bits ...

A few bits from my "Tribal Cloth" sketchbook....

experiments with paper/felt/embellishment/stitch.

Some my not actually get used in a finished piece, but I really enjoy playing around with different materials and techniques.
